Professional Journey
My beginnings
I have always had an innate passion for English, beginning with my own childhood experiences of being an avid reader and writer. This love and enjoyment for the subject influenced my lifelong dream of becoming a teacher.
2004 – 2008
Qualifications and education
I graduated with a BA in English Literature from Newcastle University, followed by a primary PGCE at Northumbria University, leading to my first teaching post in the North East of England.
2008 – 2015
Teaching experience
For the first 7 years of my career I taught in the UK in both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Embarking on the role of Literacy Coordinator in my third year of teaching, I was in charge of whole-school projects focusing on promoting oracy through the exploration of poetry and embedding effective writing cycles. Ahead of the introduction of the 2014 National Curriculum, I attended a number of training sessions and was a member of local working parties.
2011 – 2024
Leadership in education
I have been the Head of primary English across 3 countries and 2 continents: the UK, Spain and Dubai. I have also been a Year Leader in both Spain and Dubai and my most recent post was Lead Practitioner, where I was responsible for driving improvements in teaching and learning for over 60 classes. My most recent post was Lead Practitioner, impacting over 1,500 students.
2015 – 2024
International experience
The valuable teaching and leadership experience I gained working in British Curriculum schools in Spain and Dubai, included training and mentoring over 100 educators. The specialist subjects I worked with included Spanish, Arabic, MFL and the arts resulting in a consistently high standard of approach which was rooted in best practice. I designed bespoke, inclusive English programmes where standardised testing data reflected significant upward trends in the attainment of pupils (of which a significant number were EAL learners) consistently across the primary phase.

Educational blog
As the author of ‘Glimmers in Education’, a weekly blog on Substack, I explore areas of education which have the potential to ignite ‘thoughts and musings’ which I in-turn translate into ideas and practical suggestions. Intended to inspire educators, I am passionate about keeping the ‘glimmers of light’ alive in education – those small but transformative moments of progress and joy that inspire both educators and learners alike.
